VSR 200 yards shoot, 17th May: Match report

Given that the Sun Gods always shine upon the Vintage Service Rifle league, it was no surprise that it turned out fine, if a little breezy, for the 200 yard leg of the League, held on Bisley’s Short Siberia range on Sunday 17th May.

But the weather, it turned out, was the only predictable thing about the match: the running order that often obtains was thrown into disarray, with a cluster of great performances in a difficult course of fire that produced an interesting final roster.

Jason Buckingham top scored with his Martini Henry, a very convincing performance six points ahead of anyone else. It was a photo finish for second place; Nick Steadman and his Danish Rolling Block just nicked it from Steve Cartwright and his Martini.

We were delighted to see some new faces in Guy and Leonard Alston-Roberts-West, who respectively brought a French Gras infantry rifle and a rare Bavarian Werder. They shot for honours only from the bench, but it was great to have them taking part.

The results leave the overall League results finely poised, with maybe 5 competitors capable of lifting the League trophy, dependent upon what happens at the final shoot on 12th September (300 yards).
