Given the record of fabulous weather this spring and summer, it was no surprise to find that the sun was shining for the third and last event of this year’s Vintage Service Rifle League: the 300 yard match, shot on Bisley’s Century range.
There was a stiff breeze, and though it was mostly more or less behind us, scores rather suffered as a result. The highest of the day was a 24 out of a possible 32, which turned out to be Very Good Indeed in the conditions (well done Nick Steadman, with his Rolling Block). Martini Henrys, as usual, were the firearm of choice for most shooters, though Byron Russell competed with a Snider – and not only managed to get most of his rounds off (a challenge, given the stage timings) but also troubled the scorers on occasion.
Despite everyone’s best efforts, however, Gert Van Wyk achieved the highest overall score of the day to add to his previous victories in the first two matches of the League. In fact he top scored in seven out of the League’s nine stages, and was the overall League champion for 2025. He was presented with the League trophy by HBSA treasurer Jess McAree. Many congratulations to him.
