HBSA “4 Types” Competition – Sunday 30 July 2017

Online entry is now open for this fast and furious Snap and Rapid competition to be held on Short Siberia using a modified version of our popular HBSA Turning Targets at 100 yards.
Rifles of both allied and enemy forces from the Boer War, WW1 and WW2 are eligible and in addition there is a class for centre fire rifles with target sights and first generation ‘Transitional TR.’
The entry fee of £15 gives you 3 shoots – the course of fire will be the same for all classes – 5 shots ‘Single Snaps’ and 5 shots ‘Rapid’
Don’t delay – see the HBSA website under ‘4 Types’ – closing date for entry is 0800 hrs on 24 July!

“1910” Match Results

Please see attached for the results from Sunday. Congratulations to Peter Bysshe who again this year swept the board with the major trophies. (David Carroll has the trophies, please contact him re retrieving them.)
Special mention for Gary Shenton and his excellent score in the ‘No 32’; highest of the day by far and made even more so when considering he had a “bit of a fumble” in the double snaps and only managed to get seven shots off.
Tony Cattermole has the HBSA Certificates and the means for printing them off, so if you are entitled to one and wish to have it, please contact him.

Theft of Historic Ancilliaries at Bisley

NRA have recently had a theft reported by a member, I have pasted below an extract from the member’s Incident Report. This occurred on Friday 5th May:
I arrived early at the Zero Range to sight in my Lee Enfield .303 No 4 T sniper rifle. I am lucky to have the complete matching ‘kit’ bought some 20 years ago but only brought this morning the rifle, and telescopic sight in its tin case. I tend to visit this range early when it is quiet but on this morning there were already 2 others there setting up. I unpacked my gear on the shelf behind the 3rd firing point from the entrance and mounted the sight on the rifle. The range then quite quickly became very busy with people arriving, lining up and waiting to shoot. I asked one person if there was a competition on and he said “yes”. They all seemed to be firing three ‘qualifying’ shots and then finishing. I put the rifle on the mat and walked forward, mounted my target and returned. I then fired 5 shots and when agreed with other shooters walked forward to check my target. Being busy I then let another shooter take my place on the firing point before I resumed and then finished. When I started to pack up I could not find the sights lens cover (brown leather, marked BHG 1944 on the connecting strap) and they were not in the sight case I had left open.
The member is sure that the lens cover must have been taken, we hoped, initially, by accident but it seems not.
I am writing to you requesting that you warn your members to be careful with valuable historic equipment and make sure that it is secure and secondly if you should hear of a set of lens covers for sale I ask that you inform me.

HBSA ‘4 Types’ Competition – Sunday 30 July 2017

Short Siberia Range Bisley (am and pm) starting at 0830 hrs
Once again, this years ‘4 Types’ event will be held at 100 yards to simulate battle shooting with a wide variety of Historic Service rifles.
There will be classes for Boer War, WW1 and WW2 rifles and also for those fitted with target sights. (Centrefire only).
A single course of fire (no sighters, so please bring zeroed rifles) of 5 rounds single snaps, shortly followed by 5 rounds rapid for all classes using the HBSA Fig 11 turning targets. The £15 entry fee gives you three shoots.

FESAC Annual Conference & AGM – Bilbao 2017

As members will know I just attended the 2017 FESAC AGM in Bilbao.
My report to the meeting is attached. The other country reports should be posted on the FESAC website in due course. There is no really dramatic news (unlike last year due to the EU Directive) and I will post the meeting minutes in due course. However the EU Directive certainly highlighted differences in firearms law in each country and the standards of deactivation continue to be debated, also magazine restrictions, with care needing to be taken that changes in one country’s law does not create issues elsewhere. For example, the heavy laws relating to certain ex military firearms in our host country Spain, were made evident in that deactivation is compulsory if they go into private hands.
The relationship with Firearms United was discussed, since they are such a different organisation to our associations, and we await further news on that.
Next year’s AGM will be in Jersey.

EU Firearms Directive

Members will wish to note that today EU directive 2017/853 was published in the EU journal. It comes into effect on June 13th. The process of implementation should be completed on September 13th, 2018.

Several EC regulations are still to be written, like the marking requirements, the rules for alarmguns and the new version of the deactivation regulation.
The coming 15 months will therefore be critical. Further relevant information will be posted as appropriate.
Meanwhile members will note that collectors and antiques are dealt with in paragraphs 17 and 27 of the preamble. There is much mention of member states laws and in part III of Annex I antiques are declared exempt from the definition of “firearm”

Sporting Rifle Day 10th June 2017

Our annual HBSA Sporting Rifle day will take place on Saturday the 10th June at the usual venue, BSRC, Bisley.
Shooting is moving target, Running Deer at 100m (full bore 8mm limit), Running Boar at 50m (.22RF) and also static targets at 100 yds.
Larger calibres and Rook Rifles may be allowed at RCO’s discretion on static or moving target as Imperial Historics practice.
Bring plenty of ammunition as on moving target we can get through a lot of shooting. Please also bring FAC and SCC, and in addition, any specific targets that you may wish to use on the static frames. Normal HBSA range fees apply.
This meeting also coincides with a Heritage Pistol meeting on Cheylesmore, and with Tony Cattermole’s now celebrated barbecue lunch for both rifle and pistol shooters, plus any guests. £6 gets you a wide selection of BBQ goodies plus desserts and soft drinks. This will be held adjacent to the new Cheylesmore Range.
Rifle shooters, please confirm to me if you will be coming to the BBQ as Tony needs accurate numbers for catering. Pistol shooters, please confirm BBQ attendance to Molly Milner, no need to also confirm to me unless you want two lunches.
Look forward to seeing you there for what is usually a jolly good HBSA day, with plenty of shooting.
