HBSA Open Long Range Championships – Match Report

posted 25 Aug 2017, 09:15 by Tony Cattermole   [ updated 25 Aug 2017, 09:16 ]
A disappointingly small number of only 11 competitors shot this competition at 900 and 1000 yards on Stickledown range in sunny weather with moderate winds. The wind on the practice day on Saturday 19th was much stronger, with gusts which made shooting very tricky especially later in the afternoon. The downward trend in the number of Black Powder rifles appearing continues, with only 2 competitors entering this class which used to be so popular. Congratulations to all our winners. Those who are eligible for HBSA 1st place Prize Certificates may claim one through the HBSA website. (Note: Due to the low number of entries, a second place certificate will only be awarded in Match VIII ‘ The McBride’ ). RCOs were Mike Townsend and George Tondryk, assisted by Maurice Kanareck at the practice day, with Jim Stevens providing the hard working markers.

This ‘Snaps’ and ‘Rapids’ competition at 100 yards using a modified version of our popular turning Fig 11/NRA DP1 targets, attracted a good field of 20 entrants. The Match results >>>> The weather was breezy and rather overcast with sunny periods, the rain holding off until the end of the last detail at 1220 hours ! The markers supplied by Jim Stevens did a great job as the action was fast and furious. Our thanks go to Neil MacFarlane who ran the firing point, ably assisted by George Tondryk and David Carroll. Unofficial ‘Firing Point Style’ awards:
  • Milo Thurston for shooting his Lebel with the appropriate tin hat (potential additional award available for the appropriate moustache too next year?)
  • Kieran Whelan who did so well to win the Siege Of Ladysmith with 10 ex 10 shots on the target (6 bulls and 4 hits) with a BP Martini Henry 577/450
  • The stunning 50 ex 50 with a standard iron sighted Mauser G98K of Peter Fearon to win the Two Types is also worthy of special mention

The Long-Range Championship Meeting will be held at Bisley on Stickledown range at 900 and 1000 yards on Sunday 20th August, with a practice day on Saturday 19th . We have booked the services of our usual experienced marker team and Mike Townsend is the match organizer, point of contact and RCO for both match and practice days. This event is intended to encourage the use of Vintage, Classic, Veteran and Post Veteran first generation 7.62mm Service and Target rifles under competitive conditions, but mainly to have an enjoyable day shooting alongside other like minded individuals. If you have not previously attended this meeting come and have a go, we are always ready to assist and encourage new comers. Entry to the Competition is strictly ‘Online’ and details can be found on the HBSA website under ‘Competitions – Open Long Range Championship’. Don’t delay as places are limited ! When booking, I do not need the name of the Match(es) you are entering, just RH or LH shooter ? and BP or Nitro ? Booking for the Saturday practice day is not necessary, but informing the RCO by email or phone of your intention to attend would be helpful. (See below). Any one who is prepared to offer their services and assist in running the practice day and competition should contact Mike Townsend. E-Mail: rifle.practice@hbsa-uk.org
